Apple Sauce

The ‘sauce’ - or overview - on AI apps you may find useful.

Today’s apple (again): Claude

In the last letter, we explored how many people are breaking up with ChatGPT for Claude, Claude's origin story, and how Claude differs from ChatGPT.

One big thing I didn’t mention, but you may have seen in one of Anthropic’s popular ads, is that ChatGPT is introducing ads in the chat 😱

Straight from the horse’s mouth, a.k.a. an email I received from OpenAI:

Just wanna keep y’all in the loop!

Today, I want to call out a few features of Claude I use and love, and a few features I am actively experimenting with and will report back on 🫡

Projects

Projects exist in both Claude and ChatGPT, and I use them heavily in both. Think of a Project as a dedicated container for everything related to a particular topic — your chats, files, and context all live in one place.

Some of my projects: annual goal planning, newsletter helper, and persona-based projects where Claude shows up as my career coach or strategist. If you're using Claude regularly and not using Projects, you're leaving a lot on the table.

Artifacts

Somebody once asked about my biggest hope with AI. My answer was that it will help unlock ideas for people and help them speak their ideas into existence.

One of my favorite ways to speak things into existence is using a free feature in Claude called Artifacts.

Whenever you create something with Claude — not just ask a question, but share an idea or a vision for something that you actually want to build — an Artifact opens up as a live canvas alongside your chat. And what you can build might surprise you.

  • Websites, flyers, landing pages & one-pagers: If you have any sort of digital asset that needs graphic design, but like me, you don’t have graphic design skills, Artifacts is great for mocking up designs. By describing what I'm trying to build and giving Claude my content, maybe some color schemes, and ideas, Claude can mock up and draft some really great designs that I can either use directly by copying the code or copy by building them out in Canva. That’s how I created the first draft of my website and drafted my workshop one-pager!

  • Dashboards & reports: If you have any data that can be represented in a spreadsheet and you would like to see it as a visual report or dashboard, Claude does a really good job of building those for you as an Artifact.

I built a dashboard representing Titanic survival data.

  • Presentations: Yes, there are AI-powered presentation builders, like Gamma, that I have shared previously. But if you want more agency in building a slide deck but need help to visually represent your idea or information, drop your content in and let Claude help you structure and visualize it, without handing everything over to a third-party tool.

  • Mini apps — This is where it gets fun. I built a cutesy math game for my kid in a unicorn + cupcakes theme. A single prompt, zero coding required. And that’s the tip of the iceberg. Bring your creative juices or your peskiest challenges and speak your idea or solution into existence

Here’s the simple, one-line prompt it took to create this cute app!

If this whole concept of vibing with AI to create things sounds familiar, it might be because you’ve heard the very hyped term, vibe-coding. Artifacts are a great way to get started with vibe-coding and vibe-creating! And for some inspiration, you can explore this library of artifacts. You may discover you're capable of building a lot more than you thought.

2 more advanced capabilities I am still experimenting with are Claude Code and it’s user-friendly sibling, Claude Cowork. If you’ve had a chance to play around with these, let’s swap notes. Pro tip: if you’re ready to try them out, as a first project, use Claude Code or Claude Cowork to clean the Downloads folder on your laptop!

🤢 Anthropic Drops Safety Pledge - After all the spotlight I’ve been shining on Claude in these past two newsletters, I was disappointed to see that they’ve rolled back their safety pledge.

🍇 The U.S. Dept. of Labor’s AI Literacy Framework - I'm a big fan of AI Literacy Frameworks, so I was interested to see that the government published its own. I'm biased, but I like our AI Literacy Tree better 🙂
