Today’s apple: ChatGPT

As an Ammi and entrepreneur, life and work continuously present me with new challenges and queries I’m unsure about.

Should I register my business as an LLC, an S Corp, or a C Corp?
How do I clean the red paint splotch on my rug without destroying my rug?
Which digital games or skills, if any, are good to introduce to toddlers?

Normally, I would turn to the vast expanse of the internet for expert guidance. Considering the AI powering ChatGPT has been trained on data across the internet, I use it to guide me in tackling these challenges more efficiently.

ChatGPT for expert guidance

There is an art to using AI apps like ChatGPT. It’s all about how you input your question or instruction to the AI. This is called prompting.

You can prompt AI to act like an expert on a particular topic. Here’s my simple prompt to seek guidance from an Al expert:

As a [domain/category/topic] expert, please provide a straightforward and effective method for [insert your challenge].

How to use ChatGPT

1. Visit the ChatGPT website and click "Sign Up."

2. Create an account with your email and password.

3. Once logged in, start a conversation by typing or pasting your text in the chatbox, and ChatGPT will respond in real-time.

Here, I use ChatGPT to address my stain removal issue with the following prompt:

As a stain removal expert, please provide a straightforward and effective method for removing a red Crayola paint splotch from my rug without destroying my rug.

Sometimes, ChatGPT's responses help me solve my challenges. Other times, they guide me on what to explore further, whether through additional prompts, a Google search, or consultations with human experts Whatever the case, it’s always better than starting from scratch.

Like with any internet application, I don’t share sensitive, personal information with the app and always consult human experts for health or medical advice 🙂

The Alphabet Soup of ChatGPT

As we’ve discussed previously, explanations of ChatGPT tend to involve a lot of letters and numbers: GPT-3.5, GPT-4, LLM, AI…just to name a few. This AI-phabet soup is a lot to digest at once, but here’s a first course!

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a chatbot. A chatbot is a computer program that humans can interact with in natural language, like English, as opposed to clicking or coding.

ChatGPT is powered by AI to process human input and provide human-like outputs. Specifically, ChatGPT is powered by an AI model called GPT.

What is GPT?

GPT, or Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, is an AI model developed by OpenAI, designed to generate human-like text. Let’s break down the G, P, and T:

• Transformer models enable computers to understand the relative importance of words in sentences, making them efficient at learning and responding.

• By Pre-training these Transformers with data from the internet, the model learns language.

• Finally, provided human input, the model can Generate the next most likely word or sentence based on the context it's given.

In short, the T is P, so it can G!

Every so often, OpenAI re-trains GPT to update it with fresh data and improve its safety and performance. The model has evolved from GPT-1, released in June 2018, to the latest version, GPT-4, released in March 2023.

But wait, there’s more!

As you can imagine, an AI-powered chatbot that has learned from the internet is incredibly powerful and has lots of uses. What if I told you that GPT isn't the only model of its kind? In fact, lots of similar language models exist and are continuously being developed. But we'll save those letters for another meal 🙂
