Guest Jamila Raja on AI in health and home

There is no one quite like Jamila Raja.

I am lucky to call Jamila one of my best childhood friends. She is hilarious, has many intriguing hobbies, is a doctor-in-training, and readsā€¦a lot.

One of these beings is Jamila Raja.

In any conversation with Jamila, you will laugh till you cry, learn at least ten new things across at least five different topics, and come away with solid food, technology, or entertainment recommendations. Since generative AI exploded almost two (!!) years ago, Iā€™ve been curious to get her take.

This is why I am excited that she agreed to write a guest post for us!

Today, youā€™ll discover:

šŸŒæ Letā€™s grow!

Hello ammi.ai readers!

I have been called upon to write a newsletter while the original Ammi is busy being a 3x Ammi.

For those who are wondering, I am Jamila Raja, a childhood friend of the creator of ammi.ai and a first-year internal medicine resident in the Pacific Northwest. I am a fan of the growing AI landscape, especially when it makes my life easier. I also take a lot of pictures and do crosswords.

(Note from Ruqaiya: check out @coolskyjam, where Jam shares pictures of cool skies)

I figured this would be a good edition for a quick flyby on healthcare + AI, a rapidly expanding field. Anyone who is someone has their feet wet on this topic. I hope this edition of ammi.ai makes things a little more transparent.

Apple Sauce: the ā€˜sauceā€™ - or overview - on AI tools you may find useful.

Generative Filling in Image Editing

Todayā€™s apple: Adobe Firefly

Adobe now integrates AI into its editing lineup, and itā€™s made photo editing (and other editing, but Iā€™m a photographer) a lot easier.

I can literally outline an area, tell the input box what I want, and itā€™ll generate something. I can effortlessly remove backgrounds, manipulate lighting, and generate new elements within an image with impressive accuracy and speed.

efore and after using generative fill

The process above uses a picture I took at Yellowstone National Park. The background seemed a little boring, so I added some trees. I didnā€™t have to elaborate on the description to know that it should add a winter-esque scene.

You can imagine the risks this poses in the world of the internet and trying to wade through information. The potential it has in spreading misinformation and creating highly convincing doctored images isnā€™t the newest topic, but it has just been made much easier with Adobeā€™s new tools.

Not all of us are here trying to convince you of something crazy, though. I implore you to use it when you have a photo idea in your head but are not in the right place/time to snap it. Your imagination is the limit.

Paging Dr. GPT?

Letā€™s get one thing out of the way real quick. A robot will NOT replace your doctor.

That would be weird.

But alsoā€¦if it ever comes to that point, we would have to worry about a lot more than just the doctors going out of business. Engineers, architects, accountants, and generally, all the jobs with any ounce of complexity would be on the chopping block.

If we can create a robot that can manage a cranky middle-aged person with diabetes, five other co-morbidities, no access to reliable transportation, and a deep disdain for waiting rooms, then by all means, let the robots handle it.

But we donā€™t. And we should be asking, do we even want that? How would you feel as a patient if an android walked through the door?

What do you do?

Since we havenā€™t reached the realm of the scenario I described above, letā€™s discuss where I can see AI really fitting into a doctor's workflow.

What I care most about in my work is timely, accurate, and cost-effective patient care. While patients primarily interact with doctors during their visits, a lot is going on in the back end to support the decisions your doctor is making. The three things where I think AI can really come in handy are:

  1. Pattern Recognition: AI algorithms can analyze large datasets, identifying subtle patterns that human cognition might miss. This would be great when disease presentations might not be the most common or when subtle differences could result in a missed diagnosis.

  2. Decision Support: tools that consider clinical guidelines, research papers, and patient data to suggest optimal management strategies for when thereā€™s more than one way to treat. Doctors can validate these recommendations against their expertise and patient preferences.

  3. Administrative Efficiency: AI automates administrative tasks, reducing paperwork and freeing up doctorsā€™ time. This allows them to focus on patient care. The patient might not see this part of the job. There are always notes to be written, insurance stuff to do, and other back-end things that weā€™re forced to do.

The average patient might be surprised at how much paperwork is involved, thanks to the medical-industrial complex. Iā€™ll be patiently waiting for my robot assistants to take care of that.

Some tech-y stuff I love

Roomba

For anyone who doesn't have a Roomba, let this be your sign to get a Roomba. My love for my vacuum (who we named Joomba) is endless, and she roams my house picking up dust and crumbs, which is a job I do not want to do. She has a map of my house in her electronic brain that she created when I gave her a tour on her arrival. She is a part of my family. We love Joomba! šŸ§¹ā¤ļø

Google Arts & Culture App

Turn your pictures into the style of famous works of art, learn more about a piece as you wander a museum, take a virtual hike up a mountain, or pick out a painting and use your phone to imagine what it would look like on your bedroom wall. Immerse yourself in art. Itā€™s good for youā€¦doctorā€™s orders.

Mind the mess, I just moved into my new place.

Cultivating Conversation: A mini crossword.

Many thanks to Jamila for the fun, informative post. Hereā€™s hoping you find the paperwork-filling robot of your dreams!

Thanks for spending a few of your precious, precious minutes with us.
