I’d like to start by sharing something pretty scent-sational.
My younger child likes to chomp my nose. This is in addition to swatting, scrunching, and bonking my nose. Usually, I wouldn’t mind, but I happen to enjoy my nose and appreciate the work it does, such as identifying when my child needs a diaper change or knowing when my pot of rice has inevitably burnt.
Recently, however, I learned that AI can smell! More specifically, an AI model has been trained to identify an odor by analyzing its chemical structure.
Now that I know that AI knows what my nose knows, I’m no longer too worried about my nose.

Today’s apple: Glimpse
Glimpse is a browser extension that serves as an AI assistant for web browsing.
If you’ve been using ChatGPT or any AI chatbot, you have likely experienced its immense power. But, the free version of ChatGPT has its limitations - it cannot browse the web or access real-time information. It is trained with data till January 2022. Imagine, however, harnessing the power of ChatGPT while browsing the web.
Glimpse for browsing the web efficiently
Glimpse takes some of the manual work - like scanning multiple websites, scrolling through pages, and switching tabs - out of browsing the web, so you get the answers you’re looking for more easily. Here’s how it works:
Glimpse is a free Google Chrome extension. Sorry to those who are not Chromeys! (Chromeys are like Swifties but for Google Chrome)
Once you download it, Glimpse will appear in a side pane in your Chrome browser.
Give Glimpse an instruction. Glimpse will process your instructions, search and scan the web, and respond to your request. Bonus: Glimpse cites sources!
Some ways I’ve used Glimpse
Finding a top-rated recipe to utilize specific ingredients.
Scanning the webpage of an online course to find out how long it will take to complete.
Glimpse helped me quickly find information from the webpage of an online course.
By sharing the link to its product listing, determine if a particular sunscreen would be suitable for sensitive skin.
Glimpse is powered by the GPT 3.5 and GPT-4 models. Personal data submitted on the site is not shared or sold.

As a parent in a family with a couple of dietary restrictions, I spend a lot of time scanning nutrition labels. Side note: I would really 💚 an AI tool for this.
Naturally, as someone who also assesses AI technologies, I am always curious: what are the ingredients - or data - used to ‘train’ a particular AI model?
Let’s look at the Taylor Swift of AI models: GPT by OpenAI

GPT is the model that powers ChatGPT. It’s popular, sometimes controversial, and currently dating a football player (kidding!). It evolves as it learns more. You could say, it has eras. Right now, we are in the GPT-4 era.
What does it mean to train an AI model?
An AI model is like a complex math equation with many variables. To get accurate results, it's trained with numerous examples, called training data. The model adjusts its variables based on this data until it produces acceptable answers.
What are some of the data sources that were used to train GPT models?
The purpose of the GPT models is to generate human-like text in response to a given prompt. Here is an ingredient list, or the training corpus, for the GPT models. The latest GPT model, GPT-4, is trained with data until April 2023.
Common Crawl: A dataset that includes a wide range of web pages.
WebText2: A dataset consisting of web pages with a focus on diverse and high-quality text.
Wikipedia: A crowd-sourced online encyclopedia that provides a wealth of information on various topics.
Books1: A collection of books covering a wide range of genres and subjects.
Books2: Another collection of books that adds to the diversity of the training data.
This helps us understand what a given AI model knows and what it doesn’t. For example, ChatGPT powered by GPT-4 should give me a pretty decent summary of Taylor Swift’s rise to fame, but it won’t be able to tell me what she wore to the last Kansas City Chiefs football game. Glimpse might be able to help with that!
I know that got a bit technical, but we’re out of the woods now! I hope this was easy to digest.
